Lessons are 50 minutes in length. Included in this time, participants are taught basic grooming and horsemanship skills. These skills are fundamental to the therapeutic horseback riding experience. The contact can help form an unconditional bond between horse and rider, which has been shown to improve an individual’s self-esteem.
Therapeutic riding offers highly effective therapy for mentally and physically disabled individuals. It has proven to be particularly effective with children. The rider is working on exercises to develop strength, coordination, balance and self-confidence. Horseback riding trains multiple muscle groups and promotes natural and rhythmical movement. The horse's back has proven itself irreplaceable for coordination training.
Horseback riding, usually unavailable to special populations, provides physical conditioning, recreational activity, social interaction and helps to build self-confidence and self-esteem. As with all of the Center's programs, friends and family members are invited to participate and come riding with us.
Our horseback riding program was featured in a segment on the Today show on July 2nd, 2007. Click below to view the clip.
