Michael O’Hearn
Michael was born with a rare congenital disorder, arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, which led to numerous surgeries and reliance on medical devices. Despite these challenges, he found freedom and purpose in skiing, beginning at age 3 with the help of volunteers. His passion for the sport evolved into competitive racing, leading him to train with the National Ability Center’s High Performance Team.
Over the years, Michael has competed in dozens of IPC races, earning podium finishes at Whiteface and Panorama and representing the NAC at prestigious events like the US and Canadian National Championships, the Huntsman Cup, and World Para Alpine Series races. His ultimate goal is to join the United States Paralympic Ski Team and compete in the Paralympic Games. As a US Ambassador during the Exchange Program at the Pyeongchang Paralympic Games, he taught South Korean youth with disabilities and fostered cultural connections.
Off the slopes, Michael shares his journey as a motivational speaker, inspiring audiences at events like The Hartford Ski Spectacular and the World Affairs Council of America. Through his speeches, he showcases resilience and determination, embodying the values of grit and perseverance. Michael credits the NAC for providing him with the resources and community to refine his skills, pursue his dreams, and make a lasting impact on and off the mountain.
