David Been

David Been first became involved with the NAC in 2016 when VADM (Ret.) Dick Gallagher, then an NAC board member shared the organization’s mission with him while David was still active duty. When David retired, he came to work in Salt Lake City, remembered the NAC and was thrilled to have the opportunity to serve. David is currently Senior Director of the Air Force Mission System Requirements, Broadband Communications Sector for L3Harris.  He chooses to be involved with the National Ability Center because, “I was so impressed with not only the high quality of adaptive recreation offered to the NAC’s guests, but also that the guests didn’t have to worry about the cost of the visit. I was also pleased to see the number of participants who were prior military members and the amazing positive feedback they gave the NAC.” An interesting fact about David is that when he was in high school back in New Jersey, he used to be friends with Tom Mapother. He recalls how he and his friends poked fun at Tom when he said he wanted to be a professional actor.  David says, “a short time later, he changed his name to Tom Cruise and I’d say he got the last laugh!” Tom Cruise went on to become famous pretending to fly jets in fictional combat while David went on to fly real jets in actual combat.
