Policies
We are the seekers and explorers, the fun-makers and adventurers.

We believe outdoor recreation and adventure should be accessible regardless of ability, which is why we’re so passionate about accessibility, in our programs, on our website, and beyond.

If you have a disability that requires a translation service, please contact us 21 days in advance so we can work to make reasonable accommodations.

The National Ability Center requires closed toe shoes for all programs except aquatics, water sports, paddling, and river rafting. Closed toe shoes are defined as: Shoes that completely cover the foot and heel. Sandals or any other type of shoes with openings, holes, or slits in the shoe are not considered closed toed shoes (examples of footwear NOT considered closed toed shoes include: Crocs, Keen/Chaco/Teva sandals, ballet flats, flip flops, etc.).

For equestrian participation boots with a firm sole and a ½ – 1 inch heel are strongly recommended. In programs where shorts are acceptable, they need to be at least finger tips in length.

We are strongly committed to building the accessibility of our surrounding outdoor spaces and public lands. We are working closely with the BLM, Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation, Moab Travel Council, National Parks Service, Park City Mountain Trails and others to focus efforts on accessible trails and spaces.

This work is just at the beginning of what can be. Please reach out to us if you wish to share your thoughts and ideas. Together we can make a difference. Let us know how we can be a resource and advocate for accessing outdoor recreation areas beyond the National Ability Center.

Payment and Payment Plans or Scholarship Applications are due at the time of registration. Payment is considered past due two (2) weeks prior to the program start date with the exception of Hippotherapy, in which case payment is due within thirty (30) days of receiving the previous month’s invoice. We accept all major credit cards.

The participant’s account must be current with no outstanding balances to participate in programs.

To ensure quality programming and remain in good standing, it is an expectation that you communicate when you are unable to attend your scheduled program with advanced notice. The National Ability Center adheres to the following cancellation policy. Cancellation notices received within the following time frames will be eligible for refunds or make-ups and will be treated as detailed in the situations below. The National Ability Center provides programs in a variety of locations and environments, which are dynamic and ever-changing. Some of these locations include public lands or property owned by a partner of the National Ability Center. We do our best to accommodate mobility needs.

Due to the nature of adaptive outdoor recreation and adventures, our ability to provide access relies on an open conversation between our participants, volunteers and staff. Additionally, some locations, programs and equipment – including but not limited to our Challenge Course, sit skis and rafting program – may require physical assistance to access. Together we can build a plan that works for all parties involved.

When operating on property not owned by the National Ability Center, please refer to both NAC policies as well as the policies of the owner operator.

The Participant Profile includes information about the participant so we can provide an appropriate instructor and give the participant a quality experience. It also includes the media release and liability waiver. Participant Profiles must be updated annually and be current at least two (2) weeks prior to the program start date. Complete your Participant Profile at portal.discovernac.org.

Friendly dogs are permitted on the National Ability Center grounds and MUST be on a leash at all times. Owner assumes full responsibility for their dog and is NOT to leave their dog unattended anywhere on the NAC grounds, in a car, or in the lodge at anytime.

The National Ability Center is an on-leash, dog-friendly location and we encourage you to bring your leashed service dog on property. Please note that all dogs, including service dogs must be leashed while on National Ability Center property and programs.

While we welcome you and your service dog, your service dog’s direct participation in programming with you may not be possible in all situations. If you plan to bring your service dog with you, you may call with the program leaders about what arrangements that will best suit your situation prior to your arrival.

As an example, due to equestrian safety, dogs are not permitted in any aspects of equestrian programming, however we have identified locations on property that are safe spaces for your dog to be tethered or there are crates available to be checked out during the time of your program. Participation and ability to tether is dependent on the behavior of the dog. Please refer to these safety requirements are based on potential risks and are not intended to be discriminatory in any way.

The National Ability Center and discovernac.org is committed to providing a website that is accessible, regardless of technology or ability. We actively work to increase the accessibility and usability of our website and in doing so adhere to many of the available standards and guidelines.

This website endeavors to conform to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities. Conformance with these guidelines will help make the web more user friendly for all people. This site has been built using code compliant with W3C standards for HTML and CSS. The site displays correctly in current browsers and using standards compliant HTML/CSS code means any future browsers will also display it correctly.

In efforts to ensure accessibility, The National Ability Center tests discovernac.org with the following tools and organizations:

Compliance

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability. To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more. This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs. Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments. If you wish to contact the website’s owner please use the following email [email protected]

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

  1. Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  2. Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.

Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first element of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus to drift outside of it. and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples: Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported on our website
  • Epilepsy Safe Profile: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Vision Impaired Profile: this profile adjusts the website so that it is accessible to the majority of visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Profile: this profile provides various assistive features to help users with cognitive disabilities such as Autism, Dyslexia, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Profile: this profile significantly reduces distractions and noise, to help people with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders browse, read, and focus on the essential elements more easily.
  • Blind Users Profile (Screen-readers): this profile adjusts the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is installed on the blind user’s computer, and this site is compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments
  • Font adjustments – users can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions. Assistive technology and browser compatibility.
Assistive technology and browser compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS, and NVDA (screen readers), both for Windows and for MAC users.

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs, there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating, and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements.

We are continually seeking out solutions that will bring all areas of the site up to the same level of overall web accessibility. In the meantime, should you experience any difficulty in accessing the discovernac.org website, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 435.649.3991 or [email protected].
